Don was born into a tradition
of music. His grandfather,
Ambrosio LaConte performed
at various Opera venues
in his native Italy before
his first appearance at
the Chicago Met in the late
1920s. His Mother,
Ann, also performed in a
variety of operas and concerts
before retiring from the
stage.
Don Costas first public
appearance occurred as a
teen in a production of
the musical Student
Prince. It became
clear to the audience as
they leaped to a standing
ovation after every performance
of his talents. Although
he won a Music Scholarship
to Gonzaga University, the
Viet Nam War was raging
in Southeast Asia at the
same time. Instead of accepting
the scholarship he decided
to carry on another family
tradition and enlisted in
the U.S. Navy.
However, his musical abilities
were quickly recognized
in the service as well.
At the request of his military
superiors he created an
All Navy music
touring group, The
Don Costa Trio. Don
and his band were shuttled
from coast to coast entertaining
his fellow sailors with
a mixture of folk, country,
light rock and his original
songs. Since the service
Don has devoted most of
his time to his family and
his musical attention to
his church while continuing
to compose. Dons professional
memberships include the
Musicians Local 47 in Hollywood,
Ca. and the American Society
of Composers, Authors and
Publishers (ASCAP).
This site focuses on his
latest composition: Daddys
First Born Child.
As his daughter Jennifer,
was planning her wedding
she presented Don with a
list of tunes. She asked
her Dad to select a song
for their Father-Daughter
Dance. Over the next
several months he anguished
over the list. None of the
songs came close to expressing
anything of what he was
feeling about that special
moment. His oldest child
was getting married! And
she was marrying a wonderful
young man from an equally
wonderful family. They took
great pains to honor their
parents; faith; family and
traditions that are the
very fabric of who we all
are. This was an effort
that could only be honored
in return with a special
song of its own. So, Don
proceeded to write his own.
The reaction of every audience
"Daddys First
Born Child". has been
performed for is immediate,
emotional and meaningful.
Every audience relates to
the lyrics and their own
child or parental experience.
Even producer Dave Pearlman
found the music so moving
and lyrics so touching and
relevant that he dubbed
it:
a wedding
song for the next 100 years.
Dons ultimate enjoyment
however, was the ability
to write that special song
for his oldest
daughter Jennifer, while
recording it with his youngest
Julianne. |
